The only exam I failed at school was German language.

I studied two languages – French and German. I passed my French exam easily, and failed the German exam easily.

I know why I failed.

The German syllabus was 90% spoken, whereas the French syllabus was focused on learning to read and write in French. When we spoke French, it was mostly reading aloud from a textbook. A whole lesson could go by without me having to converse in French with one of my classmates. Even better, in the exam I didn’t have to speak any French at all.

The German class was different. The focus was on speaking conversational German – so in class it was all talk, talk, talk. For a shy 11 year old boy with public speaking anxiety, this was simply a recipe for disaster.

At this point you might be wondering why on earth I chose to learn German given my fear of public speaking. At the time I had a choice between learning physics or German for the last two years at school. I’d already done a year of physics and knew I didn’t have the makings of a rocket scientist or astronaught, so German seemed like the obvious choice.

The German exam comprised a one hour conversation (in German) with the examiner, a person I’d never met before. My teacher sat in a corner and observed the proceedings. A large microphone was placed in front of me, to capture my every word, so the examiner could assess my performance later. There I sat, all eyes, and ears on me. I can smile now as I recall the memory, but at the time I wasn’t smiling. I was a nervous wreck!


Public speaking anxiety

That exam wasn’t the last time I struggled with public speaking anxiety. I struggled with it for a large chunk of my life until I found a way to break free of the fear and to start enjoying speaking, and performing in public.
