What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is not therapy, per se. It's simply the utlisation of our natural ability to enter trance. Trance is a focused state of consciousness that facilitates learning and change at a sub-conscious level. It is our natural learning state and when we are in this state we are more open to new ideas and information, ideas and information that we might otherwise reject.
We experience trance states many times during the course of a day. Even passing into ordinary sleep involves a kind of trance state.
People experience this trance state in slightly different ways (there is no such thing as a 'hypnotised feeling') and you may recognise it as a state of relaxation and a comfortable feeling of detachment, the way you feel at certain times of the day when you mind is not fully engaged in what is going on around you.
It's important to know that hypnosis is something that you choose to experience and success requires your active participation in the process. The hypnotist is simply the facilitator and guide.
What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is using a hypnotic trance as the vehicle to more effectively treat a variety of medical and psychological problems.
Hypnotherapy was approved by the British Medical Association as a valid medical treatment in 1955.
Hypnotherapy enhances the effectiveness of a wide range of therapeutic techniques and approaches. The techniques and approaches I use will depend on the needs of the client and may be drawn from the fields of Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy, NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), Solution Focused coaching, EFT, (the tapping technique), EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Re-programming) and mindfulness.
It is estimated that 85% of people will respond at some level to clinical hypnotherapy. It is natural and safe, with no harmful side effects. It is often successful where other conventional treatments have failed and change is often faster and more deep rooted. When carried out by a trained and qualified hypnotherapist the benefits can be long lasting and often permanent.
HYPNOSIS IS SAFE, AND WE ALWAYS HAVE A CHOICE WHETHER TO ACCEPT OR REJECT A SUGGESTION NO MATTER HOW DEEPLY IN TRANCE WE ARE, IF WE BELIEVE IT TO BE IRRELEVANT OR UNHELPFUL.
Clinical Applications of Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy is medically accepted to benefit the following and more: unwanted habits - smoking, nail biting, bed wetting, weight control / healthy eating, improve work / study / sporting performance, boost self-confidence and achieving potential, phobias, compulsions, emotional problems, sleep problems, inhibitions, worries, reduce stress, tension and blood pressure, stomach problems, IBS, gynaecological problems - PMT, psychogenic infertility, obstetrics (painless childbirth), skin problems, pain control, minor surgery, dentistry, arthritic pains, aches and pains, some sexual problems...
Put simply, where your problem is due to habitual conditioning (habit formation), accumulated stress or unresolved events in your past then hypnotherapy can help you change those habit patterns and create better, more helpful patterns.
What to Expect in the Session
Together we'll get really clear and specific about what you want to achieve from your session(s) - your outcome. We'll explore your presenting problem only to the extent we need to, because my approach is solution focused.
The likely number of sessions will be discussed (whether one session or several) and the fee will be agreed. We'll run through the client questionnaire you completed prior to the session and I may ask you some additional questions.
I'll explain the process of hypnosis and how it is used in hypnotherapy to help you make changes to your thoughts, feelings and behaviours. There may be some preliminary testing and practice before you experience hypnosis for the first time with me.
At the end of the session if you have chosen one of my packages you'll receive some 'homework' to complete before the next session e.g. to listen to a hypnosis track each day.
