The continuous ‘running commentary’ inside your head corresponds to tiny movements in the tongue, in which the tongue is ‘saying’ the words of that monologue. When you stop your tongue from moving, the inner monologue ceases.

Stopping your tongue from moving can be achieved by either physically holding the tongue with your thumb and forefinger (a little awkward!) or more simply by placing the tip of your tongue on the roof of the mouth directly behind your top teeth.

Give it a go now.

Just imagine that there is a little droplet of olive oil on the roof of your mouth, just behind your top teeth.

Now place the tip of your tongue at that exact point, and imagine that you are balancing the droplet of oil, holding it in that position. When you do this your tongue becomes still.

Now notice how quiet your mind becomes as you continue do hold your tongue there.
