Hay fever is the name given to an allergic reaction that occurs when the immune system reacts to an innocuous agent, such as pollen, as if it were an enemy to the body.

If you have an allergy to pollen, your brain believes that this is a life-threatening substance and your immune system goes into action to fight the substance. Your immune system reacts by producing antibodies that trigger the release of a chemical called histamine — this is what causes the sneezing, itching, swollen eyes and a runny nose, etc

I used to be a hay fever sufferer. Interestingly, I wasn't born with hay fever, but for some reason, in my mid-forties, my brain decided pollen was a threat. My symptoms were so bad that I was taking a daily dose of anti – histamine tablets and nasal spray to control them.
