Autoimmunity is back in the news with people asking the question: ‘Does having an autoimmune disease make you more susceptible to catching COVID-19?’
It’s natural for people with autoimmune disease to wonder what COVID-19 this means for them.
Doctor Ricard Cervera, head of the Autoimmune Diseases Service of Hospital Clínic, Barcelona and his colleagues have looked into this question and have concluded that currently there is no clear connection between autoimmunity and COVID-19.
Autoimmune diseases are common
There are a lot of people interest in the knowing the definitive answer. Autoimmune diseases are common, affecting more than 23.5 million people.
Autoimmune disease – The mind-and-body connection gone wrong
There are many kinds of autoimmune disorders but all of them are characterised by one central biochemical process – that the body attacks its own cells and tissues causing havoc (systemic inflammation). How an autoimmune disease affects a person depends on what part of the body is targeted. For instance, rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease that affects the joints, results in joint pain, stiffness, and loss of function. Systemic lupus erythematosus, an autoimmune disease that affects the skin, can result in rashes and swelling of the skin. Grave’s disease, an autoimmune disease that affects the thyroid gland, can result in fatigue, weight gain, and muscle aches.
The impact of stress
It has been repeatedly demonstrated that many kinds of stressors are associated with poor or weakened immune functioning (Glaser & Kiecolt-Glaser, 2005; Kiecolt-Glaser, McGuire, Robles, & Glaser, 2002; Segerstrom & Miller, 2004).
The current medical model – symptom relief
Autoimmune diseases usually fluctuate between periods of remission (little or no symptoms) and flare-ups (worsening symptoms). The current medical model for treatment focuses on relieving symptoms or using a battery of steroids and/or immunosuppressants to suppress the immune response, not by treating the cause. Each of the powerful drugs used comes with its own list of side effects.
Addressing the source of the problem
Treat the fire, not the smoke.
To cool off inflammation in the body, you must find the source. One of the ways you can treat the fire is with hypnosis.
Hypnosis can help improve the functioning of the immune system
The use of hypnosis as a vehicle to help improve the functioning of the immune system is gaining momentum. Hypnosis is proving to be highly effective in alleviating symptoms and there is clinical evidence that hypnosis can alter the immune system response.
The American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis 38(2), 71-79 cites a study by Ruzya-Smith, where only hypnotised patients had significant alteration of immune response. Also, the Journal of Psychiatric Research 36(3), 179-187 cites a study by Ford, E.A. that concluded that pleasant imagery was an effective intervention in reducing fibromyalgia pain during the 28-day study period.
