If you’re like most solo entrepreneurs or small business owners, you are under constant pressure from work and personal demands. The range of business related demands you face is wide ranging and ever increasing – demands from customers, suppliers, employees, new legislation etc.
In today’s fast-paced, competitive marketplace, the ability for entrepreneurs to cope under pressure is often the difference between business success and failure.
Pressure
As long as we perceive we have the ability and resources (internal and external) to cope with all the demands we face, we experience pressure. We all need a certain level of pressure to feel energised, excited and motivated to perform at our best.
Excessive Pressure
However, once we perceive we can no longer cope with the accumulated demands we face, the pressure becomes excessive and we move past our personal ‘tipping point’ (Check out the Pressure/Performance Curve) .
Stress
Our mind interprets excessive pressure as a threat to our physical and/or emotional well-being. In response to that threat we experience stress, a cocktail of symptoms comprising physical sensations, thoughts and behaviours. Stress has a negative impact on our performance, productivity, creativity, and innovation — the very things, as a business owner, you need to support business growth and success.
Chronic Stress
When we experience excessive pressure over a sustained period the stress can accumulate and become chronic. Chronic stress has a detrimental impact on our mental and/or physical health and well-being. Sooner or later, rather than achieving the business success we dreamed of, we find ourselves ‘burnt out’.
The effects of prolonged chronic stress on our mental and physical health — let alone our productivity — are too serious to ignore...
