Panic Attacks

'Panic attack' is the name given to an episode in which a person experiences a discrete period of intense fear and distress for no apparent reason.

Panic attacks are common. About 1 in 4 people will have a panic attack at some point in their lives.

If you have experienced a full blown panic attack, you might well rate it as the highest level of fear you could ever experience.  Indeed, a panic attack is utterly terrifying and you will probably have been convinced you were dying.

What causes a panic attack?

A panic attack is triggered when our survival operating system (SOS) identifies a real and present danger to our wellbeing. Often a person is unaware of exactly what it is their SOS has identified as a threat because there is no obvious threat in the environment around them.

Once a threat has been identified the SOS activates the stressor response and stress hormones are released. The stress hormones prepare your body to either escape the threat or fight for your survival. The sensations you feel as your body adapts are part of the normal and natural feeling we call 'acute stress.'

Because you are feeling stressed but there is no obvious external threat, your mind searches for a reason why you're feeling stressed. Because it can't find anything in the environment around you, it looks inside. If may interpret the stress as a sign that you are having a heart attack, stroke, or going mad. These thoughts and catastrophic imaginings are then interpreted by your SOS as further evidence that you are in danger. So, it keeps the stressor response activated, thus increasing and perpetuating the stress symptoms. As a result, your thoughts become even more catastrophic fuelling even more stress. This escalating fear and distress is a panic attack in action!

Important: In a small number of cases, panic attacks can be triggered by a physical condition, such as heart and lung  irregularities, an undiagnosed thyroid disorder, inner ear disturbance and epilepsy. They can also sometimes be triggered by side effects of prescribed drugs (particularly tranquillisers and antidepressants), withdrawing from drugs, alcohol or smoking, or even by tight clothing that restricts breathing. It is best to see your doctor if you are concerned about possible causes.

What does a panic attack feel like?

The first time it happens, you can think you are having a heart attack since it is frequently accompanied by acute physical symptoms including chest pains, dizziness, shortness of breath, and profuse sweating. There may also be feelings of unreality and you may also think that you are dying or that you are going crazy or that you may lose control of yourself.

Panic Disorder

For many people, they will have one attack or a few and then, they will go away on their own, but for others, attacks become more frequent over time. The more intense and unpleasant an initial episode, the greater the risk that a person will later develop a diagnosable 'panic disorder' – that is, recurring attacks along with significant fear of having more attacks.

A 'panic disorder' diagnosis is given by a doctor, general practitioner or trained psychologist.

Panic disorder is characterized by recurrent, unexpected panic attacks and hyperarousal symptoms such as palpitations, pounding heart, chest pain, sweating, trembling, or shaking (Frances, 2004). These symptoms are often experienced as catastrophic and can have a great impact on daily life.

A panic disorder is known as a ‘condition’ rather than a disease because, as the word implies, the condition can be changed. It is not permanent. However, it is not unusual for people to be suffering for years with panic disorder before seeking help.

The secret to ending panic attacks

The secret to putting an end to panic attacks for good is getting a good, clear understanding of what they are, and how they occur. When you understand something and shine a light on it, panic becomes less scary.

Simply knowing more about panic can go a long way towards relieving your distress. Like that dressing gown hanging on the back of your childhood bedroom door. The one that was a monster before the light was switched on and you saw what it really was.

When you combine an understanding of panic with the HYPNOSIS4PANIC Program you have the solution you were looking for.
