Have you been contacted to book your vaccination against coronavirus vaccination yet?
As a nation we’re being asked to have an injection to protect ourselves, our loved ones and our fellow Kiwis, but will your needle phobia stop you from getting the vaccination?
Needle phobia
Needle phobia is the name given to the fear of medical procedures that involve any type of needles or injections. It’s estimated that up to 10% of people experience a moderate-to-severe needle phobia (although many more experience a mild fear)?
For many people, simply the thought of a needle can trigger uncomfortable to intense fear sensations. Perhaps you’re one of them?
Typical physical sensations include increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, trembling, shaking, and breathlessness. Sometimes the sensations and fear can be so intense they trigger a panic attack. Fainting is a common experience, with around half of people with a needle phobia having fainted at least once.
Causes of needle phobia
For some people, a past unpleasant experience with a needle created their phobia. Others may have learned to fear needles through observing other people’s reactions and attitudes to needles, or receiving information that they are dangerous or painful. Some people hold underlying beliefs such as “needles are awful” or “needles are dangerous.”
What can you do to overcome your needle phobia?
The good news is that there are several effective treatments available.
Many people gain relief from phobias through graded exposure. This involves exposing yourself to needles in a controlled and careful manner such that you gradually become desensitised to them. You start with situations or tasks that are easier for you to manage (like reading the word ‘needle’), then work your way up to more challenging tasks (like holding a needle). This “step by step” process allows you to overcome your fear bit by bit. This approach is effective but takes time to achieve results.
The REWIND technique produces rapid results and is helpful in situations where you might need to have a needle or injection soon, as is the case right now. REWIND is a non-intrusive, safe, quick and highly effective psychological method for removing phobias developed by the Human Givens Institute. As a certified REWIND practitioner, I’ve used the technique to help over a hundred people overcome their specific fears and it’s my ‘go to’ technique for removing needle phobia.
You’ll be amazed at how calm and in control you are
Imagine what’s it’s going to be like once your phobia is gone and you can think about needles and injections without the intense fear and anxiety you used to experience. And when you go for an injection, it will amaze you just how calm and in control you feel. You’ll behave as most people do, thinking of the process as a minor unpleasantness, something you want over and done with to reap the benefits available.
How long does it take to clear your needle phobia?
The REWIND technique can be experienced in one 90-minute session.
