“The unfortunate result of our highly evolved brain is that it’s fertile ground for a harvest of suffering.
If the brain is the cause of your suffering, it can also be its cure.”
~ Rick Hanson PhD – founder of the Wellspring Institute for Neuroscience and Contemplative Wisdom
The reason why our brain can be the cure for our suffering, is thanks to our ability to engage in ‘self-directed neuroplasticity’.
Doesn’t that sound cool?
It’s our ability to use our mind, to change our brain, to change our mind for the better.
You might have to read that a couple of times to make sense of it!
To put it more simply - it’s our ability to change ourselves from the inside out.
As for the difference between the brain and the mind - the mind is what your brain does.
Changing ourselves from the inside out
Unfortunately, none of us were born with a user manual for our brain. And to make matters worse we weren’t taught how to manage our brain at school. Perhaps, that’s because our brain, being the most complex object known in the universe, is too difficult a subject to include on the curriculum?
Fortunately, we now have a new breed of coaches (like me :)) who coach with the brain in mind. We specialise in teaching people how to use their mind to rewire their brain, so they get different, and better, results. For example:
- being anxious, stressed, depressed.
- smoking, overeating, procrastinating etc.
- believing they aren’t good enough.
- build self-esteem and confidence
- enhance motivation
- achieve goals
This type of brain based coaching is so effective that it's made its way into the business world where it’s called - ‘Neuro leadership coaching.’
Amazing things are possible when you change your mind
“As your brain changes, your mind changes.”
~ Rick Hanson PhD
Neuroplasticity is a continuous process – brain creates mind – mind changes brain – changed brain creates changed mind and so on …. 24/7, 365 days a year. Our brain is constantly learning, and changing, in response to our experiences.
When we take intentional control of that learning/rewiring process, amazing things are possible.
And that’s why I love my job.
95% of our behaviour is controlled sub-consciously
Did you know that it’s estimated that 95% of our thinking and behavioural habits, once learned, are controlled by our sub-conscious mind. So it makes sense to create change at this level of consciousness. The sub-conscious mind works much faster than the conscious mind and so change is often surprisingly quick to create.
Habit change has been studied extensively in recent years, and we now know how to effectively, and efficiently, break and make habits. The tools and techniques needed to do this can be found in a number of recently published books including:
It's your mind - how do you want to shape it?
Imagine what you could achieve, once you have the knowledge, tools and techniques that enable you to change your mind, with intent, when you choose to. You’ll be better able, not only to survive in today’s hectic, often overwhelming world, but thrive, succeed and be happier.
Coaching with the brain in mind
My approach to coaching with the brain in mind is integrative, meaning that I draw on evidence based tools and techniques from a wide range of fields including: brain based coaching, life coaching, cognitive therapy, linguistics, and clinical hypnosis.
And because each and every one of us is unique, I tailor my approach to fit the unique individual (and brain!) sat in front of me, to ensure the individual gets the results they want, whether that’s to overcome a problem, or reach a goal.
So if you’re interested in harnessing the power of your mind to help you learn, change, overcome problems and grow, contact me today, on 021 056 8389 or use the Book Now button below and start your journey of self-directed neuroplasticity.
