We tell ourselves that this year is definitely the year we’re going to change our lives for the better. It’s ‘good riddance’ to those bad habits and ‘hello‘ to those new healthy habits.

Yes, this year we are definitely going to make that dream a reality.

What resolutions have you set?

What resolutions have you set, or are thinking about setting? Perhaps you’ve resolved to:

  • quit smoking for your children and grandchildren.
  • lose weight and look great for that upcoming big event
  • build your self-esteem
  • achieve that elusive work/life balance

Change can be difficult

Our motivation is always highest at the start of a new activity, but we often falter at the first sign of temptation or stress.

Change can be difficult because we’re creatures of habit and when things become difficult we revert to our familiar behaviours, and trusted coping mechanisms, even if they’re unhealthy ones, such as comfort eating, smoking, drinking.

Research tells us most people have abandoned their resolutions by the start of February. Perhaps you’re still working on resolutions you made last year …. or even the year before, because you just couldn’t follow them through?

But these people aren’t actually commenting on the ‘change’ they are commenting on the ‘result’ of the change. The ‘change’ actually occurred in an instant. The day they stopped those unhealthy lifestyle choices. In fact, they actually changed long before other people began to notice.
